Program Description:

Are you mystified by the idea of coding? Do you wonder whether coding would even help you in your work? Are you just looking for somewhere to start?

If so, this program is for you! Coding skills are within your reach and we will help you get started! In this program, librarians who have learned to code on the job will share their experiences with finding and solving computer-based problems on the job. You will learn to identify tasks or problems that could be accomplished or solved through coding, how to pick a language or platform to best accomplish your goals, where to find resources to learn to write code, and how low-code and vibe-coded solutions should be evaluated and integrated into library workflows.

Our presenters plan to address the following questions, among others:

• What kinds of actual library problems can be solved with automation and coding?
• How do you measure the value of a solution against the time it takes to code it?
• What are the most basic things you should learn first to address common issues (APIs, Python, PHP, etc.)?

This is the first installment of a four-part webinar series that will focus on the theoretical and practical aspects of Official RDA. This session will dive into the entity-relationship conceptual model and articulate how it forms the foundation of Official RDA. We will then look at the Official RDA Toolkit structure, concepts, and terminology with practical examples of how this abstract content standard applies to legal materials. 

Subsequent webinars will go deeper into RDA entities, elements, and relationships and tackle tricky structures like aggregates and diachronic works. Whether you are a seasoned cataloger, or brand new to RDA, this series will help you understand Official RDA, navigate the Toolkit, and feel prepared for what comes next with resource description.
