What works in academic library acquisition negotiations

Negotiation is a necessary skill for academic librarians working with electronic resources, especially as libraries confront inflating costs for collections resources and impacted budgets for library materials. However, a popular belief persists that women are bad negotiators because “women don’t ask.” In a field defined by its female demographic, how does this affect librarians? We can and do ask for more. Join Amy Pham (Senior Electronic and Open Content Librarian, University of San Diego) and Jill Grogg (Lead Strategist, Lyrasis) as they discuss the results of an interview study conducted by Pham suggesting that academic librarians negotiating for electronic resources are data-driven, communicative, and experience success, regardless of gender. Together, Pham and Grogg will share what’s worked for them in their combined 25+ years of negotiation experience and invite others to share their own experiences with negotiating library resources.
Speaker Bios:
Amy Pham is Senior Electronic and Open Content Librarian and Associate Professor at the University of San Diego, Copley Library. Pham’s professional activities cover a wide range of interests, including electronic resources management, workflow management, open access publishing, library/vendor relationships, and copyright. Pham recently published “Who’s asking?: Gender, race, and negotiation outcomes” in Democratizing Knowledge +Access +Opportunities: The Proceedings of the ACRL 2025 Conference, April 2-5, 2025, Minneapolis, MN. Jill E. Grogg is a Lead Strategist with Lyrasis. In her role, Jill negotiates with vendors and content providers to ensure Lyrasis member libraries and partners reach the best possible outcomes for the acquisition and delivery of electronic resources and services. Jill has published and presented widely, including co-authoring The Librarian's Guide to Negotiation (Information Today, 2012).
