DESCRIPTION

Join us for an hour of conversation to hear about some of the recent work NASIG’s Equity & Inclusion Committee has been engaged in and how different academic institutions are supporting DEI initiatives in their libraries. The panel will feature Moon Kim and Ilda Cardenas of the E&I committee along with special guest Kelly Besser. The session will conclude with a guided open discussion on what initiatives other institutions are taking as well as a conversation about what can be done moving forward. 

SPEAKER BIOS

Moderator:

Dana Sinclair is the electronic resource librarian at SUNY Old Westbury where she maintains the library’s website and list of databases and ebooks.  As the Chair of the E&I Committee at NASIG and the Immediate Past President of the New York Black Librarians Caucus, she strives to bring awareness to marginalized groups within the library field. Dana holds a BA in History from Adelphi University, an MLS from CUNY Queens College, an MA in Urban Affairs from Queens College, an Advanced Certificate in Library Administration from Long Island University at Post and is currently a PhD Student in Information Studies at Long Island University at Post.


Panelists:

Moon Kim - As the acquisitions librarian at Ohio State University Libraries, Moon develops efficient and effective practices to support the evolving environment of collection development and acquisitions. Moon leads the business processes for acquiring library resources for general, international, and special collections. She previously held acquisitions positions at the California State University Fullerton, University of Washington, and the Getty Research Institute. Moon holds a Master of Library and Information Science, Graduate Certificate in Digital Humanities and BA in Greek and Latin, all from UCLA. Moon is currently a fellow of the Association of Research Libraries Leadership and Career Development Program.

Ilda Cardenas is the Electronic Resources Librarian at Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, CA. Ilda has a BA in the History of Modern Mexico and an MLIS from San Jose State University. She has been working in libraries almost her whole life, starting as a volunteer in elementary school and falling into cataloging as an undergraduate. Ilda was a cataloger at Mississippi State University Libraries and later transitioned to electronic resource management.

Kelly Besser is the UCLA Library Special Collections Archivist. In addition to UCLA Library Special Collections, Besser has also processed collections for the African American Firefighter Museum, the Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum, the Yosemite National Park Service Archives, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Tom of Finland Foundation. Besser holds an MLIS with an archival studies specialization from UCLA.
