DESCRIPTION

This webinar will discuss methods for integrating Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity and Accessibility (DEIA) into resource description workflows and the critical, and necessarily continuous, aspect of DEIA in our work. This work requires that library staff are afforded with opportunities to reflect upon and question traditional resource description standards and practices. Drawing from examples from projects undertaken by the Cataloguing, Metadata, and Digitization department at the Carleton University Library, such as respectful terminology projects involving Indigenous and LGBTQ collections and cataloguing code of ethics and problematic language statements, presenters will discuss how integrating DEIA into our workflows, while urgent, takes time and is never completed.

SPEAKER BIOS

Jennifer Browning (she/her) is the Head of Cataloguing, Metadata and Digitization at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. Her work interests involve the impact and influence of library metadata on user communities and continuous professional development for library staff. Jennifer received her MLIS from Western University and previously worked as a Metadata Librarian at the University of Toronto and a Discovery Systems Librarian at Carleton University.

Kevin Burke (he/him) joined Carleton University as a Metadata Analyst in July 2024. A graduate of the University of British Columbia's iSchool, Kevin was previously the Creative Arts Librarian at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada. His current work focuses on batch processes, inclusive description, and music cataloguing.
